BIOGRAPHY

Nikolai Saoulski was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. At the age of 15, few months before the collapse of the Soviet regime, he emigrated to France where he studied graphic design. After graduating, he entered the Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris to study fine art. Intent on pursuing his artistic ambitions, however, he subsequently left higher education and worked as an artist for many years, shifting his focus from painting and photography to film-making. He has since directed numerous works on artists and exhibitions in France, Austria, Luxembourg and the United States.

In recent years, Nikolai has been commissioned to make films on exhibitions of work by Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Antony Gormley, Alex Katz, David Salle, Gilbert & George, Tony Cragg, Harun Farocki and many others. He has also worked on exhibitions curated by Norman Rosenthal, Michael Bracewell, Isabelle Huppert and Sofia Coppola.
